Meet Yvonne!
Yvonne is a Mover with SMWR. In her role, she helps with packing and storing a client’s belongings on a move. She joined Shelter Movers after wanting to become more involved in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. “When I read about Shelter Movers I didn’t know that this was a service that many people needed and it stuck out to me.”
One of Yvonne’s favourite things about volunteering with SMWR is getting to meet other people.
Every move is always different and you’re always meeting new people which keeps it fun and interesting. One of the best parts of Shelter Movers, besides helping the clients, is meeting other volunteers. It’s been really fun meeting other people and sharing the same values as them
Yvonne says that seeing how appreciative and grateful the clients and their families are after moves is very motivating for her. “Even though it can get tiring, it’s always so heartwarming knowing that you’re making a positive impact in someone’s life and making their lives a bit easier.”
In her spare time, Yvonne enjoys figure skating, travelling, spending time with her friends and family, crocheting, and trying out new restaurants. Fun fact about her – she has moved 6 times in her life!
When asked if she has any advice for current volunteers, Yvonne spoke about the importance of keeping an open mind.
Having to pack up and move can be very difficult for some people and sometimes it has to be done on a short notice. So, it’s always great to have an open mind and be understanding of the client as it can be very challenging for them and that the work you do is always appreciated and impactful.
Thank you, Yvonne, for all the important work you do to help clients!
