Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shelter Movers?

Shelter Movers is a Canadian volunteer-powered nonprofit organization that provides free moving and storage services to individuals and families fleeing family violence and intimate-partner violence (IPV). We collaborate with local referral partners and community organizations to help Survivors safely transition to new homes, often during times of crisis.

In Canada, the most dangerous place for a woman and children is in their home. Abuse and violence depend on isolation and control and abusers are more likely to escalate control (up to and including femicide) when a Survivor announces their intention to leave. Survivors face the prospect of losing everything they own when they decide to leave. Moving and storing one’s belongings is expensive, logistically complicated, and often dangerous. We believe everyone has the right to safety, so we provide moving and storage services at no cost to survivors of abuse when they need it most.

I want to interview someone from Shelter Movers - how do I contact them?

We are thrilled you’d like to shine a light on the critical work we do! To maintain confidentiality, volunteers and staff are prohibited from communicating with media agents without prior authorization from the Marketing & Communications team. Send an email to media@sheltermovers.com indicating your name, media outlet, a general description of what you are after, and the timeline that you are working on and our Marketing & Communications team will promptly put you in contact with a spokesperson.

Can I film or photograph a move?

While we know that photos and videos of people actively fleeing abuse are very impactful storytelling tools, our priority is to care for the Survivors we work with. Because we work with people who are in their most vulnerable state, we cannot be sure we’re achieving informed consent to document their experiences. Photography or audio/visual recordings of the Survivors we work with, their children, their pets, or the location(s) of their residence(s) before, after, or during a move is strictly forbidden out of respect for their privacy and safety. Our Marketing & Communications team can provide you with a wide variety of staged move imagery upon request.

Can I interview a Survivor you've worked with?

Reaching out to a Survivor for an interview in relation to their move(s) with us presents ethical concerns because of the nature of our relationship with them and the chances of aggravating existing safety concerns, compromising their privacy, or re-traumatizing them during their journey forward.

The safety of Survivors is our main priority and we have a responsibility to ensure Survivors remain in control of their stories. Not only can our spokespeople and Marketing & Communications team provide specific client feedback quotes as well as anonymized impact stories, but many of our volunteers and staff are also Survivors who are willing to share their stories when appropriate.
