Founder | Chief Executive Officer | Fondateur | Président - Directeur Général
Shelter Movers has achieved so much in our first eight years thanks to our generous community of volunteers, donors, agencies, and community partners. There remains, however, much to be done to address a fundamental gap in the gender-based violence (GBV) sector in Canada. To continue meeting the needs of the families we serve, Shelter Movers must generate significant and sustainable revenue growth.
With careful planning and approval from our Board of Directors, there are two new developments we are excited to share with you. The first:
Our first-ever Chief Development Officer, Ainsley Dowle!
This new executive position reflects our commitment to sustainability so even more survivors may access our one-of-a-kind service for years to come.
Ainsley hails from Vancouver, but has lived and worked in Ottawa and Toronto in progressively senior fund development roles at several major charitable organizations over the past 13 years. As Chief Development Officer, she will be accountable for leading the development and implementation of Shelter Movers’ Fund Development strategies as well as Marketing and Communications.
“It’s an incredible privilege to join Shelter Movers at this pivotal time when we are poised for unparalleled growth. As advocates for survivors of Gender-Based Violence, I want to ensure our success is measured not only in milestones achieved but also in lives positively impacted”, Ainsley says. The second:
Purchase of a majority share in a for-profit business: Firemen Movers Inc.
Firemen Movers is a successful, 14-year-old Toronto-based moving company started by a local firefighter. You may know them because they have provided Shelter Movers’ volunteers with truck driving safety courses and collected furniture from their customers for donation to Shelter Movers’ clients, in the past. They have been a great community partner and, beyond the revenue this investment will generate for Shelter Movers, it’s another way for our organization to integrate into the community. This is a very common strategy that charities such as YMCA and Habitat for Humanity have undertaken to create jobs and send profit back to their charity.
Firemen Movers and Shelter Movers will operate as separate entities, reporting to two separate boards of directors with two separate CEOs. Patrick Karpat is the CEO of Firemen Movers as well as an investor with Shelter Movers in the acquisition of the business. The Board of Firemen Movers will regularly report to the Board of Shelter Movers on the status of this investment.
