On November 18, Shelter Movers Greater Toronto celebrated their extension into Peel Region with a community launch event. Shelter Movers staff, volunteers, and community gathered at the BraeBen Golf Course in Missisauga to acknowledge the work that has gone into the recent expansion of the Shelter Movers Greater Toronto chapter.
Regional councillors, local MPs and MPPs, business owners, and Shelter Movers volunteers attended the event in honour of the extension into Peel Region. Statements were made by Shelter Movers representatives including Shelter Movers Greater Toronto Chapter Director, Amanda Levine.
“We are happy to announce that we have increased our capacity as an organization to be able to provide our services to survivors in Peel Region,” said Levine. “We are eager to partner with local community agencies and businesses to ensure that survivors of violence have a safe way to leave abuse with their belongings.”
With lockdown lifting, it was clear that there was a significant need for services like Shelter Movers in Peel Region. In May of 2021, Peel police were called to 260 cases of domestic violence, and local shelters have been overwhelmed by the demand they have faced in recent months.
The decision to move into Peel Region arose organically; Shelter Movers was already completing the occasional move in the area for survivors who were moving to Peel Region from Toronto or vice versa. As well, a number of volunteers were living in Peel Region but commuting to Toronto to participate in moves. No service of this kind existed in the area and given the presence of a small group of volunteers, as well as the support of storage and security partners, Shelter Movers Greater Toronto made the decision to increase their capacity to be able to extend service to cover Peel Region. The first official move in Peel Region occurred in October of this year.
Shelter Movers would like to extend their appreciation to the title sponsor of this event, RD Law Professional Corporation. For more information about RD Law Professional Corporation, visit their website.
