December 19th marks one full year of operations for Shelter Movers Waterloo Region. Looking back on all of the milestones we achieved, it is clear none of what we did would be possible without the hard work and dedication shown by the over 130 incredible volunteers who make up our chapter. We sincerely thank all of our volunteers for the important work they do to ensure our services are available to anyone in need.
As we look forward to the new year, we hope to continue growing our team, expanding our reach, and serving more survivors in our community.
Interested in joining us? Here are some benefits to volunteering with Shelter Movers:
Impacting your community.
Shelter Movers’ mission is to provide moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. As a volunteer, you are making a direct impact on your community by helping families transition to a life free from violence.
One of my biggest motivators is how important it is to make sure children have a healthy and safe place to grow up. Children whose early experiences help them feel cared for and responded to have better self-esteem, are more independent, have less mental health difficulties, and do better in school. Helping kids early can provide lifelong support

Connecting with a team.
At Shelter Movers, you have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people, and sometimes even collaborate with others in different chapters across Canada. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to meet new and like-minded individuals, and learn from those around you.
Knowing you're a part of a team of many other volunteers and staff members who are also passionate about doing this work is motivating. You're never on your own, there's also people there to support you and answer all your questions.

Volunteering based on your availability.
We have a variety of open positions available, including in-person opportunities, like movers and drivers, and virtual opportunities, such as administrative roles. For those interested in becoming movers or drivers, a move typically lasts 4 hours, and you can sign up for moves as your schedule allows. Virtual administrative roles are also flexible and you can schedule your shifts according to your availability.
