We know that 6.2 million women in Canada have experienced intimate partner or gender-based violence.
Survivors commonly return to their abuser 7 times before leaving for good. There are a variety of hurdles making them feel trapped, including:
Survivors of intimate partner violence often face intense shame and anxiety, making it difficult to reach out for help. Hope that the partner will change can coexist with a deep fear of retaliation, creating a painful emotional bind.
We provide trauma-informed, survivor-centred service powered by compassionate volunteers, as well as police or security presence on moves. Our clients’ safety— physical or emotional—and confidentiality is of the utmost importance.
Economic dependence on an abuser and limited access to money or resources can trap survivors in unsafe situations. Without financial independence, leaving can feel impossible — the average move costs thousands of dollars.
Our services are always free: we provide moving and storage at no cost to survivors. We are incredibly grateful to the donors and partners who continue to help make this possible.
Leaving requires complex planning, which can be overwhelming amidst fear and uncertainty. Concerns about housing, childcare, and safety make the process feel chaotic and full of unknowns.
We offer flexible, responsive support designed to empower each person on their own terms. Our work is grounded in centering survivors—adapting to their needs, desires, and timing.
At Shelter Movers, we don’t just move belongings — we help families move toward safety, healing, and hope.
