Our story is a story of hope. Shelter Movers was founded on a simple belief: that no one should have to face the barriers of leaving abuse alone. Recognizing the prevalence of gender-based violence in Canada and the challenges survivors and their families face when seeking safety, a small team of volunteers came together with local shelters and community agencies to fill a critical gap. Together, they built a new kind of support—providing free moving and storage services to help people leave abuse and begin again.
That belief continues to guide our work today. Shelter Movers is the only service of its kind in Canada, powered by more than 1,000 volunteers across the country. Since 2016, we have completed more than 10,000 moves, helping individuals and their families transition to lives free from abuse.
We are grateful to the dedicated volunteers, partners, donors, staff, shelters, and community organizations who have built this movement alongside us. Their collective commitment continues to make Shelter Movers what it is today—and drives us toward a future where every survivor has the support they need to move forward safely.
